In November 2001 I received an email from a promoter offering dubplate specials from Jah Mason. A member of Capleton's "David House" Bobo camp, Jah Mason was a young up and coming artist who was starting to make a name for himself amongst the emerging camp of Bobo chanters. I'd pretty much given up the sound system by then and I wasn't interested in voicing dubplates any more but I did like the idea of doing some recordings for release so the promoter put me in touch with Mason who was in London for a show. We spoke on the phone and came to an agreement and arranged a time for a session. On the day in questions there were problems with getting him to the studio and we had endless phone calls with him and his driver to help them find their way. A number of people got word of his impending arrival and turned up to the studio to check him, but by early evening, hours after the session was due to take place, it was starting to look like it might not happen and everyone left except myself, Dougie and Culture Freeman. Eventually we got a call to say they were down the road in Dalston and needed directions on how to find the studio, so Freeman and me raced down there, found them and brought them directly to the studio. It was more than worth the wait. I sat down and played the riddims to Jah Mason and he liked them, asking who'd built them. He was surprised to find out I'd built them because this was his first time in England and he was used to producers in Jamaica only financing tunes, not getting involved in making the music. He was also pleasantly surprised when I told him to take his time with voicing the riddims - again he was used to the quick time constraints of recording in Jamaica and told me most producers expected artists to voice a tune in one take with no mistakes. He went on to say producers there would hire a studio for an hour and expect a whole heap of artists to voice the riddim and the engineer to produce finished mixes in that hour. Time is money in JA studios, for real! He went through each riddim and gave me choices of different lyrics for each. The vibes were wicked that night and we all hit it off really well. Three tunes were voiced that night - Most Royal, No Joke and Rainbow Circle Throne. All 3 were released as singles and did well, with Rainbow Circle Throne becoming a UK roots anthem and turning out to be the biggest selling single ever on the label.
   We kept in touch and on Mason's next visit in September 2002 we arranged another session and this time did 4 tunes. By this time his status in the reggae biz had grown and he reached the studio with a big possee accompanying him and more and more turning up to check him as the session progressed. Again the vibes were wicked with his trademark singing and chanting flowing non stop.
   With 7 tunes now in the can I wanted more to make up a full album so the final session took place over 2 days in the summer of 2003. This was a more relaxed occasion with only 1 person accompanying him. As well as the final tunes for the album he also voiced a couple of my riddims for Patate Records in Paris - Prince Alla's "Glory" for Saga and my version of the Drifter riddim for Request, both of which were released on 7 inch by Patate's Belleville label but which appeared as extra tracks on the CD version of Most Royal.
   The album was released in 2004 and quickly became the biggest selling album ever on the label. I spent a lot of time with Dougie to get it sounding how I wanted. We spent an entire day mixing each track. I'm very happy with the results and Jah Mason told me his bredren in Jamaica loved it too when they heard it.

U Brown - Rougher Than The Rest

U Brown began his career in Jamaica as a DJ during the 1970's working with producers such as Bunny Lee, Joe Gibbs, Dennis Brown and many many others. When U Roy left King Tubby's sound system, U Brown took over as the main DJ on the sound for a while. As well as working for other producers U Brown also became a producer himself, setting up his Hit Sound label to release his own productions featuring artists like Al Campbell and Johnny Osbourne as well as himself. I'd first linked with him in 1999 for the 3 The Roots Way album with Ranking Joe and Trinity. We kept in touch and by now he was living in London most of the time, doing shows on the Blood And Fire sound system as well as in his own right. One day we got talking and discussed the idea of doing a full album together. In a bid to capture elements of the original 1970's DJ tunes where the DJ would chat over versions of vocal tunes, I decided to use a number of riddims already voiced by other singers, and this time to leave bits of the vocals in the mix, to make it more authentic.
The album was recorded over a number of sessions during summer and autumn 2001. We took our time and never voiced more than two tracks in a day, sometimes only one. The riddim tracks which had already been voiced by others were Jah Golden Throne by Peter Broggs, Glory and Jah Mountain by Prince Alla, Weeping and Wailing by Rod Taylor, plus a couple of unreleased vocal tunes featuring Alton Ellis and Horace Andy.
U Brown was in fine style and approached the project with a lot of enthusiasm and the album saw release in the autumn of 2002.

One of the first Jamaican artists I'd worked with, I was eager to work with Prince Alla again following the Glory album and in the autumn of 2001 I arranged further sessions. Alla had been touring in Europe with Asher Selector from Switzerland and I met him at the airport and took him to the studio. He was pleased to be back working with me and Dougie again and we quickly struck up the same good vibes which had flowed during the Glory sessions. Alla voiced a number of tunes that day and over the next few days we had a number of sessions to record enough material. Live instruments were added with Crispy Horns Section, Jonah Dan on Bongos and Jerry Lyons on guitar plus percussion. The album was released in 2002.

Rod Taylor - Shining Bright

In the 1990's Rod Taylor arrived in France from Jamaica. His work in his homeland included songs for producers sunch as Prince Hammer, Prince Far I, Mikey Dread, Linval Thompson, Junjo Lawes, Ossie Scott, Freedom Sounds and others. One of the very few Jamaican artists based in France, he quickly established a big profile there and gathered many new fans with the release of a compilation of his vintage hits called "Ethiopian Kings" by Patate Records from Paris. At the time Patate was doing a lot of distribution for me in France and Pierre Patate introduced me to Rod, suggesting we could work together. So we linked up while he was in London and he came to the studio one day in the summer of 2001. As with so many of the artists I worked with, we began by doing a couple of songs. One of them "Weeping And Wailing" appeared on the compilation CD I licensed to Victory World in America titled "Rootical Vibrations". As time went by, we decided to do an album and shortly afterwards we did another session at Conscious Sounds to voice more material. The resulting album "Shining Bright" saw release in spring 2002.

Dillinger - Youthman Veteran

In the summer of 2001 I received a phone call from Dom of Blood And Fire Records telling me Dillinger was coming to London to do some shows with Blood And Fire and asking if I'd be interested in recording with him. I got in touch with Dillinger and my initial idea was just to do a couple of tracks for a single but he seemed more interested in doing a whole album so we reached an agreement and set it up. Dillinger, one of the biggest names in reggae during the 1970's, a DJ who worked with Coxsone Dodd, Lee Perry, Channel One, Yabby You, Augustus Pablo and whose song "Cocaine In My Brain" became an international chart hit - not a man to be taken lightly!
On the day of the recording session I collected him from where he was staying in Hammersmith and drove to the studio in Dalston, a journey punctuated with tales from his colourful recording past. The results came as a showcase album with DJ vocal tracks all accompanied by dubs. Musical accompaniment came from the usual suspects with riddims created by myself, Hughie Izachaar on guitar, Jonah Dan on percussion and Crispy Horns on brass.

Various - Jah Warrior Showcase Vol 2

The second Jah Warrior Showcase was released in 2001 and built on the concept of Volume One, but this time featuring entirely Jamaican artists. I like the showcase concept of featuring different artists with vocals and dubs on one album and this one came about through various meetings and recording sessions that happened in the 2 years prior to release. Prince Alla's track "Be Careful" was recorded during the sessions for the Glory album and kept aside for this project. I was introduced to the great Earl Sixteen when he came to the studio with a whole heap of artists one day to record versions of my Cuss Cuss riddim for Patate Records from Paris, most of which have never seen release. Earl Sixteen in turn linked me with the great Alton Ellis who sadly is no longer with us. A veteran of Studio One, Treasure Isle and until his death the longest working artist in reggae music, Alton needs no introduction and it was an honour to work with him. Hughie Izachaar linked me with Anthony Johnson who recorded 2 tunes for me, Africa on the Declaration of Rights riddim which came out on 7 inch and Give A Helping Hand for this album. U Brown who I'd worked with for 3 The Roots Way linked me with his good friend Prezident Brown who voiced a version of Augustus Pablo's 555 Crown Street riddim for this album. Finally, Winston McAnuff who'd also been present at the Cuss Cuss session for Patate came along to voice Tense Pon A Bench for me. I felt it was a good collection of artists and a strong album which was well received.

In the autumn of 1999 news came that Ranking Joe, U Brown and Trinity would be coming to England to tour with the Blood & Fire sound system, the Blood & Fire Records label's live showcase. At that time it was still quite unusual for Jamaican artists to record in England. A few years previously a writer reviewing one of my albums in an American magazine had contacted me to say he liked the idea of a collaboration between vintage Jamaican DJ's and the UK roots scene. That planted the idea in the back of my mind so when the tour was announced I contacted Blood & Fire supremo and long time reggae writer Steve Barrow to see if we could work something out. The outcome was positive and the sessions began one Saturday afternoon in November 1999 when Steve brought U Brown and Trinity to the studio. Both artists had a long pedigree in the business stretching back to the mid 1970's. U Brown had his own label Hit Sound and had recorded for producers like Bunny Lee, Joe Gibbs and Dennis Brown as well as producing himself. Trinity had worked with Yabby You, Joe Gibbs and countless others as well as singing under the name Junior Brammer. The session went well and both artists voiced 3 tunes with the vibes flowing. As an aside, midway through the session veteran producer Clem Bushay of the Bushays label turned up to say hello to his bredren Trinity. Ranking Joe's involvement in the project was less certain for a while. Joe was still in New York and was due to arrive in London later but at one stage it looked like he might not be able to reach in time so I was starting to look at 2 The Roots Way:-) The day was saved however when Steve Barrow arrived at the studio with Joe just 2 days before Christmas 1999. They'd come straight from the airport and suffice to say the man whose career included voicing at Studio One, Channel One, Joe Gibbs and live on the legendary Ray Symbolic sound system had no trouble firing off lyrics on the riddims.

Peter Broggs - Jah Golden Throne

Released at the same time as Prince Alla's "Glory" album in May 2000, this album with Peter Broggs was recorded in the spring and summer of 1999. Peter Broggs has a long history in the reggae business. Beginning his career recording under his real name Henry James, he'd worked with various producers including Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, Niney The Observer, Clive Chin and Prince Far I. RAS Records, one of the biggest reggae labels in America was started after owner Doctor Dread heard Peter's music and flew to Jamaica to track him down in order to record an album with him. I was introduced to Peter by his manager Colleen who informed me he was in London for a show and asked if I'd be interested in recording with him. I got in touch with Peter and arranged for him to come to the studio. My original idea was just to do one track - a version of his classic tune "Jah Golden Throne" and I built the riddim specially for this. On the day of recording the vibes were good and Peter ended up voicing 3 tunes. Although based in Jamaica at the time, he'd been living in America for many years and hadn't recorded for a while so I think he enjoyed the vibes in the studio. One thing led to another and we decided to do a whole album together so during the next few months he came to the studio a few times until all the tracks were completed. The resulting album was well received in roots circles. It was a full production combining digital riddims with live instruments - horns from Crispy Horns, guitar from Hughie Izachaar and percussion from Jonah Dan.

Prince Alla – Glory

Released in May 2000, Glory saw a link up with an artist who I held in awe during my youth – Prince Alla. Hailing from the ghetto of Greenwich Town, Prince Alla was immortalised during the 1970’s with tune after tune for producers like Freedom Sound’s Bertram Brown, Tappa Zukie, Joe Gibbs and others. A serious and humble rastaman, I first saw him at the Selby Centre in Tottenham in 1999 when he did a show with Peter Broggs, another artist I’d recently been working with. It took a while to make the link with Alla as the people he was staying with were loathe to let him work with anyone except them, but eventually we met up at Conscious Sounds and did some reasoning. Since that day he’s been to England and all over Europe many times, but to put things in perspective it should be recalled that this was only his second ever visit to London, and the last time had been many years previously. Prince had no idea of the runnings in the UK roots scene and he pulled out a tape for us to listen to of some songs he’d been doing in Jamaica. The riddims were average and as Prince was sounding us out he said “Can we do something like this?” So Dougie and I looked at each other & said “Yeah maybe, but have a listen to this first…” As we ran a few warrior riddims for Prince to hear his eyes lit up and he said “Bwoy, I never expect to hear tune like this inna England!” After hearing our riddims he was eager to start and voiced 2 tunes that day. Afterwards he said it was the best work he’d done for years and the vibes reminded him of King Tubbys. Alla came to the studio a number of times that summer and we did 7 tunes in all, with the album coming showcase style, vocals and dubs. The vinyl is currently unavailable but the CD is still in circulation.

Various Artists - Jah Warrior Showcase

Released in October 1999, Jah Warrior Showcase brought together a selection of artists I’d been working with over the past year. Peter Broggs, veteran of Studio One and Channel One who I later went on to produce a full album with was the first Jamaican artist to appear on the label. Others like Hughie Izachaar and Tena Stelin were already associated with the label; Culture Freeman, Tony Roots and Afrikan Simba had all featured on singles for Jah Warrior prior to this album. Once again Crispy Horns were brought in on most of the tracks, along with guitar from Hughie Izachaar and percussion from Jonah Dan. I was very happy with this album and felt it was a true showcase of the label’s offerings and my production style. The vinyl LP with 12 cuts is currently unavailable but the CD containing 2 bonus cuts is still available.

Tena Stelin - Lion Symbol

The 7th album release on the label, Lion Symbol came out in April 1999 and was recorded the previous year over a number of sessions. I first met Tena Stelin in 1988 at Vibes Studio in Leyton where he used to pass thru’ regularly. This was before he started working with Manasseh or Conscious Sounds, even before his first release the Commercial Bwoy 12” on Vibes Sounds 12”. Tena only did one or two specials for me at Vibes but he was there regularly to work with Blacka or Keety Roots and we met up quite regularly either at Vibes or at dances, I had a lot of music he’d recorded with Keety on dubplate at the time for the sound, and one day after I’d started the label we linked up and talked about doing some recording. The first release from these sessions came on 12” with the title track Lion Symbol. Tena brought Afrikan Simba to the studio one day to voice a DJ cut and altho’ I’d met Simba at dances before, that was the first time we ever worked together. The other side of the 12” had What Is Wrong With Man along with a next cut by a female singer called Talawah who’d been doing some tunes at Conscious Sounds. There were elements of what had gone before in the music – a few drum samples, the same jungle bass tone; but what was new about this album was its use of live horns for the first time. Chris Petter on Trombone and Dave Hake on trumpet, both from Crispy Horns section and later with Love Grocer who’d played with Zion Train and others. It added a new dimension to the music, which also featured Hughie Izachaar on guitar and for the first time percussion from Jonah Dan. It was now a real blend of live and digital sounds. Once again coming in a showcase style with vocals and dubs, the vinyl featuring 12 cuts is currently unavailable but the CD featuring 2 bonus cuts is still in stock.

Jah Warrior - Dub From The Heart Part Two

Released in October 1998, Dub From The Heart Part Two was the 6th album on the label and continued in the same style as the first Dub From The Heart. Recorded at Conscious Sounds in the spring and summer of that year, I recall the sessions as a period of great creativity. We’d do one tune a day, using drum samples as the starting point and still using the cut and paste method as on the first part. Hughie Izachaar made a brief appearance on vocal with Walking Talking Dub – a full vocal exists but has never been released. In keeping with reggae tradition, a number of other tunes were versioned in some way - Wicked Man Dub adapts the bassline from Barry Brown’s “I Love Sweet Jah Jah”; Walking Talking Dub uses the bassline from Delroy Pinnock’s mighty “Babylon Walls”, “Marching To Zion” reworks Cultural Roots’ “Mr Bossman” bassline, “Zulumatic Dub” revisits an earlier and unreleased Zulu Warriors production, whilst “Dub Vibes” takes its inspiration from Bunny Wailers “Rise And Shine”. Dougie’s mixing can be heard in fine style throughout. The vinyl release with 10 cuts is currently out of press but limited quantities of the CD containing 4 extra cuts are still available.

Hughie Izachaar - Can't Take The Pressure

The 5th album to be released on the label, Can’t Take The Pressure hit the shops in April 1998. Recorded entirely at the new Conscious Sounds studio in Dalston, just as the studio had made the step up from a 16 track desk to a 24 track, and from quarter inch reel to reel to half inch, this album was my first work with Hughie Izachaar. A veteran of the UK scene who’d been active since the late 1970’s, Hughie had worked as a session musician for the likes of Jah Shaka (Commandments Of Dub Chapter One), Mad Professor, Pablo Gad, Barry Isaac’s Reggae On Top label, King Original and others. A member of the Black Brothers group who recorded classic dubplate releases like “Come Mek We Run”, Hughie also played on Ras Imru’s “Marshall,” released on Jah Shaka 12 inch. A guitarist first and foremost, he was versatile with other instruments and could just as easily lend his hand to bass and melodica too, as well as sing. The album came in a showcase style with vocals and dubs, 12 cuts on the vinyl and 2 bonus cuts on CD. Voiced by Hughie in two sessions, the first tune to be released was the title track Can’t Take The Pressure, on the Cuss Cuss riddim, which proved extremely popular. A mixture of styles are present on the album. Some tracks featured the same techno bass sound as on Dub From The Heart, Jah Will Deliver Us used an acid bass sound which can be heard prominently on the dub, whilst Hughie plays live bass on Get Up Stand Up And Rock, this tune being virtually the only Jah Warrior production on which I didn’t play bass. A few other fragments from Dub From The Heart found their way onto the album; Don’t Run Too Fast sampled the same Prince Jammy mixed drum loop which The Dub Organiser had also recently used for Starky Banton’s “I And I Saw Them Coming”, with a reworked techno style bassline from Al Campbell’s “Gone Down The Drain” riddim thrown in for good measure. Get Up Stand Up And Rock also used a drum sample. El Nino featured a live drum loop overlaid with the bassline from Aswad’s never released “Warrior Style” dubplate. The CD bonus track Gun Play reworks the bassline from Drum Song. Lyrically, the album covered topical material as well as more traditional rasta themes; El Nino talked about the climate change brought about by global warming which was big news at the time, whilst Cardboard City highlighted the place in London’s Waterloo used as shelter by many of the city’s homeless. The vinyl is now deleted but the CD is still available.

Jah Warrior – Dub From The Heart

The 4th album release from the label, Dub From The Heart came out in September 1997. It was a real change in direction from the music I’d produced before, as almost the entire album used samples as the basis for the tracks, working in a cut and paste style which I saw as the dub equivalent of hip hop. Dougie and I took a lot of old drum loops heavily mixed by Scientist & King Tubbys etc, various sound FX from classic tunes and other bits and pieces, adding basslines and other instrumentation of our own to create what I see as a real milestone of UK dub. There aren’t many other dub albums I can think of which take this method of working to the level achieved here, other than Part 2 of Dub From The Heart and Dougie’s own Hydroponics album. A lot of other people on the UK scene at this time were incorporating samples in their work, but few to the extent heard here. Another new sound on this album was the bass tone we used. I forget exactly where it came from but I think it was from a jungle sample CD. It has a real techno sound, some people loved it, others hated it, but it became a trademark of Jah Warrior productions for a few years after this album. The first four 7 inch from the label can be found on this CD, Babylon Shall Fall, the album’s title track, It A Go Dread featuring Naph-Tali on vocal, plus Hiding From Reality. Apart from Babylon Shall Fall which was recorded at the original Conscious Sounds studio, the rest of this album was the first to be made at the new studio premises in Dalston, east London. The CD is now unavailable but we have a limited quantity of vinyl left, without sleeves.

Naph-Tali - One Of These Days

Released in March 1998 this was the third album from the label. The songs were recorded between 1995 and 1997. Naph-Tali was a young, serious and very talented young dread who I first met at Vibes Studio in the late 1980’s. On the day in question Tena Stelin was supposed to voice some specials for the sound system, but arrived with Naph-Tali and suggested I give this new artist a try instead. After hearing his voice I was more than happy to let him go thru, and over the next few years he voiced a lot of tunes for Jah Warrior sound, as well as voicing the pre-Jah Warrior tune “2000 Style” which appeared on Mr Modo 12 inch in 1989 under the name Zulu Warriors. When the label started in 1995 Naph-Tali was the natural choice for the first release and sure enough he was on the first ever Jah Warrior release with the “22nd Book” 12 inch single in 1995. Alternative mixes appear as bonus tracks on this album, as do similarly different mixes of Pollution which came out on 12 inch in 1996, reworking an old Jah Tubbys dubplate for the riddim. The title track of this album was produced entirely by Naph-Tali, who also built the riddim, and to this day still remains the only track released by the label which I didn’t produce. This was the last complete Jah Warrior album to be recorded entirely at the original Conscious Sounds attic studio, which moved to new premises shortly afterwards. The vinyl release is now unavailable, but the CD containing 6 bonus cuts is still in stock.

Jah Warrior - Great Kings of Israel in Dub

The second release on the label, Great Kings Of Israel In Dub was released in October 1996. Again recorded entirely at the original Conscious Sounds Studio located in Dougie’s attic in Stamford Hill, the vinyl release contained 10 tracks with a further 6 on the CD. A number of alternative cuts to other Jah Warrior tunes appear on the album; King Zechariah Dub is another mix of the “Conquering Lion” 12 inch, whilst King David Dub is a cut of Naph-Tali’s “Humane Beings” from before the riddim was voiced. I see this album as a small progression from it’s predecessor “African Tribes Dub!” It’s still all digital but contains some early attempts at sampling too, which was starting to rear its head on the UK dub scene at this time. Stock of the CD is virtually finished now but we have a small amount of vinyl still available, without sleeves.

Jah Warrior - African Tribes Dub

The first ever album on the label, African Tribes Dub was released in May 1996 on both vinyl and CD, with 7 bonus tracks on the CD. The CD was released thru' the now defunct Dubhead label. Neither are currently available to buy in that format but all tracks can be purchased as downloads from a variety of sources including reggaemusicstore.com and i-tunes. 100% instrumental dub and recorded/mixed entirely at Conscious Sounds studio, I'd describe it as a typical example of basic mid 90's UK dub!
